Hurricane Season Preparedness
West Baton Rouge Parish sits in the path of Gulf hurricanes every year from June 1 through November 30. WBR Emergency Management at (225) 346-1577 is your primary local source for evacuation orders, shelter locations, and storm preparation guidance. The parish communicates through local media, the WBR Parish Government Facebook page, and the Everbridge mass notification system.
Before hurricane season arrives, take these steps:
- Register for parish alerts: Sign up through the WBR Parish website for Everbridge notifications to receive text and email alerts for evacuations, boil water advisories, and other emergencies.
- Know your evacuation route: The primary evacuation route from WBR is I-10 westbound. LA-1 south to US-90 is an alternate. Have a plan for where you will go and what you will take.
- Prepare a supply kit: Water (one gallon per person per day for three days), non-perishable food, flashlights, batteries, medications, important documents in waterproof bags, and a battery-powered radio.
- Trim trees and secure loose items: Cut back branches near your home, bring in patio furniture, and secure anything that could become a projectile in high winds.
After-Hours and Weekend Emergencies
For utility emergencies outside of normal business hours (water main breaks, gas leaks, sewer backups), call the main WBR Parish Utilities number at (225) 336-2406 -- the recording provides after-hours contact instructions. For Entergy power outages, report online at entergy.com or call 1-800-368-3749 around the clock.
Gas leaks are a call-911 situation. If you smell natural gas, leave the area immediately, do not flip any light switches or use electronics, and call 911 from a safe distance. Then call WBR Parish Utilities.
