Parish Council agendas and minutes are posted online at wbrparish.org/129/Agendas-Minutes. Agendas are typically published several days before each meeting.
Many WBR Parish Council meetings are also recorded and available on YouTube. Check the parish's official YouTube channel for recordings of past meetings.
For municipal meetings (Port Allen, Addis, Brusly), contact the respective town hall for agenda availability. Port Allen agendas are sometimes posted on the city website at portallen.org.
How to Participate in Parish Government
West Baton Rouge Parish is small enough that individual residents can have a real impact on local government. Unlike larger parishes where public comment gets lost in the noise, WBR council meetings are attended by a manageable number of people, and council members are accessible. Here is how to make the most of that access:
- Public comment: Every Parish Council meeting includes a public comment period. You can address the council on any topic related to parish business. Keep your comments focused and under three minutes for the best impact.
- Agenda items: If you have a specific issue -- a drainage problem on your street, a zoning question, a concern about a proposed ordinance -- contact your council member before the meeting. They can place items on the agenda and often work on issues behind the scenes before they come to a formal vote.
- Planning and Zoning: If you are planning a construction project, subdivision, or business that requires rezoning or a variance, your first appearance will be at the Planning and Zoning Commission (1st and 3rd Tuesday). Their recommendation then goes to the Parish Council for final action.
- School Board: Parents concerned about school policies, budgets, or operations should attend School Board meetings. The committee meeting (2nd Tuesday) is where detailed discussions happen; the regular meeting (3rd Wednesday) is where votes are taken.
Council Districts and Representatives
The WBR Parish Council consists of members representing geographic districts across the parish. To find your council member, visit wbrcouncil.org or call the Parish Council office. Knowing your district and representative is the most direct path to getting local issues addressed. Council members hold office hours and many are responsive to phone calls and emails from constituents.
The Parish President, currently Riley "Pee Wee" Berthelot, serves as the executive branch of parish government and works alongside the council on parish-wide issues including infrastructure, economic development, and public safety.
